Anime and More (6 weeks – Levels: 6th - 8th grade)

Students will bring their passion for anime to this drawing class. We’ll create original anime-style works influenced by Hayao Miyazaki and other anime artists. In addition, we’ll explore other artistic influences–including William Blake, Leonardo da Vinci, Tove Jansson’s Moomins, and Art Nouveau illustrator Kay Nielsen–and incorporate these influences into our work. Students will also play the game “Magic: The Gathering” and study the cards’ artwork. Furthermore, we’ll use the natural world as an artistic influence, comparing, for instance, da Vinci’s drawings of water with Myazaki’s animation of water in Ponyo. Students will produce original artwork that’s rooted in anime but which also incorporates the styles, sensibilities, and techniques of the artists we investigate.
