We will use the outside as our visual kitchen and cook up works of art. Students will first learn cyanotype photography, a camera-less technique that involves laying an object on paper coated with a solution of iron salts before exposing it to UV light and washing it with water to create stunning white and blue images. Using the sun, we will first study shadows and light using plants, flowers, and crystals and develop intriguing compositions from our cyanotype experiments. From these initial studies, students will make cyanotype paintings with multiple layers and exposures on large pieces of watercolor paper. Eventually, we will incorporate acrylic inks into these cyanotype paintings.
